Pokemon Showdown
« on: April 14, 2014, 09:23:18 am »
Hello friends, lately I've been juggling Tremulous 1.1 as well as Pokemon Showdown. This thread will incite PS and hopefully encourage you lot to get into it. Menace and I play and I'm eager to introduce the game to you. Please take it with a grain of salt, I understand Pokemon isn't for everyone and some people see it as childish and/or not fun. This'll be a basic walkthrough to the game, there is so much information to put in however this will take a long time to make.

Introduction

Pokemon Showdown (PS) is an online F2P downloadable Pokemon Battle simulator. It takes out the long and rigorous process of acquiring and training up the Mons'. Rather, you can select any Pokemon in existence along with any item to equip him/her with and any move to teach him/her. The Pokemon Battling scene is very popular and growing rapidly, this meta game is more competitive than any yet. You pick a team of six mons' and battle another team of six till only one person has Pokemon in reserve. Friendly competitive child's play or underground fighting rink between mutant animals?

Basic Info.

Here is a typical model of a pokemon. I'll be using the mon Swampert as a model.

Swampert - The Mud Fish Pokemon no. 260

Height: 4'11"
Weight: 180.6 lbs
Typing: Ground / Water
Abilities: Torrent, Damp (Hidden Ability)
Japanese: Raguraji
Stats:
HP - 100
Att - 110
Def - 90
SAtt - 85
SDef - 90
Speed - 60
Total: 535

Notable Moves (STABs will be bolded):

-Stealth Rock
-Scald
-Earthquake
-Ice Beam
-Hammer Arm
-Muddy Water
-Power-Up Punch
-Yawn
-Sludge Wave
-Toxic
-Focus Blast
-Waterfall

Pros
Decent bulk in HP, SDef and Def are sufficient and his Att. serves well. Hazards are great against OU threats like Talonflame and Mega-Zards. For rain teams he can switch in to oncoming electric attacks due to his immunity and he has a decent move spread including Poison, Water, Ice and Ground.

Cons
Huge weakness to grass, Sceptile or Roserade would destroy. His slow speed merits possible misplays or over predictions, and once he sets up rocks he doesn't have much to do besides attempt to dish out huge damage.

Typically pokes are valued on their stats, typing, and movesets. Different mons are used for different things. Typically Swampert would be a physical tank. Due to it's highest stats being Attack and HP. He can dish out some hits and take some as well. You can use Swampert to set up Stealth Rock and then power up attack with PUPunch and then force a switch using Yawn. Or you can toxic spam.

STAB

STAB stands for Same Type Attack Boost. Meaning, if you're using a Water/Ground type such as Swampert and you use a Water or Ground move it'll gain a 50% boost. For Instance, Earthquake is a base 100 power, used by a Ground pokemon it'll be 150. This is an unwritten rule of PS and no where in-game will it mention STAB.

Typical Team

A typical team you'd see being used would include these things.

-Lead and Hazard inducer.
-Cleric/Healer
-Toxic or Status staller
-Physical and/or Special Wall
-Physical/Special Tank
-Early game or Late game Sweeper

Type Chart

There are 18 possible typings for Pokemon, they all have their strength and weaknesses and a lot of the types have stereotypical stats. Like usually Steel types are very bulky in defense, and usually Normal types have tons of HP, or how Fairy types are very specially defensive.

This is all for now, I'll continue this thread later. But here's a link to their site if you'd like to download or check it out.

P.S. If anyone from Pokemon Showdown sees this and wants to give me money for advertisement I'm cool with that  8)
