Blackface

Blackface was a theatrical device/makeup technique used to make white performers seemingly appear as black. It was popular in the mid 19th century. It is often considered offensive because it can imply stereotypical caricature of black people as in minstrel shows. This technique/performance was later banned from ever being used again because of the US Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
